Sex + Gender Playlist
This month, we’re exploring what it takes to make school a space where we can have inclusive and powerful conversations about sex & gender.
Below you’ll find some resources to help anchor your learning and get your wheels turning in advance of our experiences together.
Part 1
A starting point…
We mailed you an excerpt of Iris Gottlieb’s beautiful book, Seeing Gender. We highly recommend picking up a copy. As we enter this month’s theme, we thought the first couple of pages offered a useful grounding or recap.

Here are a few additional articles. What do they illuminate about the need to rethink how schools approach sex + gender? What possibilities do they inspire?
Camp I Am
Fourteen years ago, the mother of a gender-nonconforming son organized a “summer camp” of sorts, where her child and others show up as they were. This NYTimes article chronicles the lasting impact of that space for former campers.
Non-Binary Parenting
This podcast is an interview with Krys Malcolm Belc, nonbinary transmasculine parent, essayist, and author of the memoir The Natural Mother of the Child. They talk about what it means to be a parent, our gendered assumptions about parenthood, and the dynamics of gender identity in having and raising children.
Students Deserve Real Sex Ed
Christopher Pepper, a teacher in CA, wrote this article about the state of sex-ed in his state and offers links to useful resources.
