Families

How do we honor and support families as the “first teacher?”

Field Trip: October 8th, 2021 10-11:30 PT

Workshop: Oct 20th, 2021 12-1:30 PT

We know that children thrive when school and family come together. But deep, symbiotic partnership is hard to come by. What leads schools and families to keep each other at arm’s length? What does it look like when families meaningfully shape their child’s education? And what do families expect and need from schools?

This month we’ll explore these questions alongside organizations who are experimenting with new models of “family engagement.” Access to this month’s experiences start at $25.

In the Families workshop, we’ll dig in to practical strategies for strengthening family-school partnerships. One resource we’ll use is Beyond the Bake Sale, a “practical, hands-on primer on helping schools and families work better together.”

Participants will connect with folks across the country in diverse roles to identify specific challenges they would like to engage with, such as addressing difference, sharing power, and scaling up to district-wide implementation.

Participant takeaways

“Your hosts were amazing people. The energy surrounding the work was palpable. Keep bringing authentic guests to the table.”

“How do we help our schools think more about creating spaces for heritage language preservation and center the multitude of languages spoken in the Denver community? Ms. Benavides was so inspiring! Thank you for brining together such a diverse group of educators to talk about such a critical issue.”
